Dear Friends of Miami Members, |
Through the cooperation of teacher Peggy Page and the 8th grade students at Miami R-1 School, we are happy to be sending you the first Friends of Miami brochure. We hope you are pleased with the students' work. We approached the school to give students a challenge and prizes for the first, second and third brochures to be judged by the Friends of Miami: $20 first place to Melissa Jennings, $10 second place to Linzi Bledsoe, and $5 third place to Ashley Morrow. The Friends are very pleased with the brochure but if you, as a member of our organization, have questions or suggestions, please feel free to contact us. We appreciate all the work the students put into this project.Sunday, July 20, is our annual Friends of Miami meeting to be held at Miami's St. Cloud Restaurant, owned by Billy Joe Narron. No carry ins, buffet at 12:30 pm, and business meeting follows. Connie Winfrey, Director at Van Meter Park, and Don Riddle will be our guest speakers. See below. Come join us and bring a friend. We have recently done rearranging at the Museum to accommodate our mini schoolroom which includes pictures of Miami High School graduates and 8th grade students from Miami R-1 School and two old desks. Florine Hisle donated all the pictures and Miami High School Year Books; we would like to obtain books for 1939, 1941, 1945, 1946 and 1948 so as to have all the year books. If anyone should have one lying around collecting dust, please remember the Friends of Miami.I would like to thank all individuals for the work keeping the Museum active. |

The staff at Van Meter State Park wish to thank the school children and parents of Miami R-1 School for helping launch a series of programs on American Indians in April. You might have missed Rose Drake's program on Cherokee baskets in May. Yet you can still come to the visitor center to view her collection of baskets on display. In May we also saw, heard and felt the vibrations of Iron Horse, a drum group. These Native American youth demonstrated their cultural knowledge through traditional dance, singing and drumming.See you on July 20 for the annual Friends of Miami meeting. Guest speakers will be Don Riddle and Connie Winfrey with the Manitou Bluffs Mid-Missouri Chapter of Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, Inc. In order for "all voices" to be heard about the Lewis & Clark expedition, Connie will be telling about the Native American experience. It should be a lively discussion and great show and tell with a replica of the Lewis & Clark keelboat (table size of course). |

www.sullivansfarms.net/friendsofmiami is a site to visit. We carry current events and news and an up-to-date membership list. Our most ambitious project right now is building a web record of cemeteries in the Miami vicinity. Our site draws out-of-area visitors interested in history and genealogy and other unusual matters. For example, email communication from a Los Angeles writer for the summer film release, Bad Boys II (Saline County Sheriff Wally George's web site uses the theme from Bad Boys II as background music), proposed a storyline comparing Miami, Missouri and Miami, Florida. Florine Hisle and Shirley Malan got together great material as requested and the writer was delighted but latest news says the director hates the story. Maybe the zero crime rate in Miami, Missouri was a problem. Disappointing but exciting. Still, if you plug "friends of miami" into any internet search engine, the first choice will be our web site. We're proud of this achievement as the first choice used to be friends of Miami in Florida. Shows you what hard work and perseverance in the heartland can do. If you visit us on the web and have comments or suggestions for additions to the site, please email Sidney Sullivan, webmaster, at s1dney@cdsinet.net. She'd like to hear from you. For those interested, Secretary Shirley Malan keeps a fine hardcopy notebook with the website material at the Miami Post Office. |
