The Best Movies of 2023
The Best Movies of 2022
2019 Many of the best movies I've seen recently haven't yet had an official theatrical release. That's why, this year, my list includes movies that haven't been released -- ones that I saw in festivals in 2018 and 2019 (though not including ones from the 2019 New York Film Festival, many of which are still snaking their way through the distribution pipeline). I've put these undistributed films on the list, in the place that they'd hold there if they were in fact considered official releases, and I've italicized them to emphasize both their difference and the cinematic ecosystem's failure on behalf of some of its foremost works and artists (excerpt). The Best Movies of 2019: thirty-five released, eleven unreleased.

2015 No one can see everything, and I hope to be able to add to the list when catching up with good things I’ve missed. This year, I didn’t predetermine the number of names in a given category but followed my pleasures to fill up to ten slots. One twist: this is the year of paired performances that are both equal and inseparable, both among leads and supporting roles, and the list reflects that experience (excerpt).

STILL AT THE MOVIES and TOSSING IN SERIES
Adaptation ~ 2002Opens with character ID internally; life is a dialog between alter and ego interrupted by many an externality. To want passionately is the prize which means reducing this to a manageable size. Spike Jonze directs Meryl and Nic. The movie is slick!
Alice in Wonderland ~ 1951 or
Alice in Wonderland ~ 2010?
Ed Wynn or Johnny Depp: How much does or should the hatter matter?
The Artist ~ 2011Uphill. When I want to watch Gene Kelly, I will.
