THE AWAKING OF JANE
Laughter, singing through the air.

The old woman's ear cupped the sound and stood at attention, responding as if it belonged to a trained hunting hound. Laughter riding on the breeze, playing a musical note, one that made her lined lips smile.

A child's laugh, how the sound stroked her mind awake.

The old woman turned her head as if in doing so her blind eyes would be able to see the source that had aroused her from her slumber.

It came again...the laughing joy...bursting through the leaves of the bushes this time, drawing the curtain of fog that keeps her mind prisoner open to the clear bright day.

DOLLS
A boy and girl, age 5 and 7 respectively, overheard while playing with dolls.

BOY: OK, I will play with you, but I am the guy.
GIRL: OK, but I am the one who goes to work.
BOY: Can I drive the car?
GIRL: Yes, but they need to get married.
BOY: Married
GIRL: Yes. Where?
BOY: How about a garden?
GIRL: No, has to be a church.
BOY: I want to go outside and pretend they are in Hawaii. We can fill a bucket full of water and it can be a swimming pool. They can go swimming.
GIRL. They could get married in a garden.
BOY: We could pretend that they climb a high mountain that is really a volcano.
GIRL: I like the garden idea.
BOY: I know. They could get married on the mountain that is really a volcano. Lava starts flowing over the top, and it's so hot it kills everybody.
GIRL; No, that's too violent.
BOY: They could get married in a barn. My aunt got married in a barn. She wore cowboy boots and played the guitar.
GIRL: Her dress doesn't go with cowboy boots.
BOY: How about they go fishing and get married after they catch enough fish for all the guests to eat?
GIRL: Then the bride smells like fish.
BOY: Let's just throw her off the cliff and go play ball.
GIRL: OK.
