Depression At Our House (excerpt) | During the early part of the depression, Dad had planted molasses cane and when he had lost other crops to the drought, his cane grew and the juice was pressed out to make molasses. The molasses furnished some needed income as well as being used as a sweetener rather than buying sugar. Bee trees were also found and the honey therein was very much enjoyed on the hot bread and biscuits mother made. | Irene Thomas Sims -- The Great Depression BitterSweet Days 1929-1939, © 2010 |
