SUSAN LONG ~ In Memorium
The Sue Long Family Literacy Program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Marshall, Missouri.
Toweling off
The shower sheen
I'm forced to notice,
My body.
(Can it be my body?)
From the chemo.

Pulling on
My soft socks,
I cannot feel
My toes,
As if they are asleep.
(Will they wake again?)
Nerves raw
From the chemo.

Combing out my wig,
I miss
My hair.
How I miss
My hair;
Miss my toes, my body,
But if the cancer

I will bless
The chemo.
Looking Good
She says,
"So good to see you
Looking good."
I smile,
Give her a hug.
I mean it.
But my mind
Stands me back an hour
At my bedroom mirror,
On the roses.
The Sword
Hangs over my head
The proverbial sword,
I do not count the days
But know the date.
"May Second,"
I tell folks
Even if they do not ask.
May Second is the day
The sword will drop,
Or not,
Or not, please God,
Or not.
